Alto Hospicio, Chile

In Alto Hospicio, on a high plateau south-east of Iquique, the principal local industry of mining has generated sustained economic growth in recent years. The proposal is to build commercial facilities and services which meet the locals’ needs, reducing their current dependence on the capital. The project, located on hilly terrain accessible from the main highway, will be developed on three levels: a university building over three levels, a shopping mall open on two levels, where you will also find the cinemas, a large DIY store with access from the street behind and three floors of underground parking.
The project’s form is reminiscent of a lighthouse and can be seen from the city and the coast, thanks to the use of panels of transparent reinforced glass in a U shape which creates a new landmark on the horizon. One of the design’s principles has been the use of durable easy-maintenance materials in response to the humid climate, salty air and frequent sandstorms.
